The geopolitical standoff over Greenland reached a fever pitch Monday morning as the U.S. President issued a stark ultimatum to the Nordic region, signaling a potential military and economic confrontation with America’s closest European allies. Despite a 2025 poll indicating that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming a U.S. territory, the President appears undeterred in his ambition to secure the Arctic island. In a series of provocative posts on Truth Social, the President pivoted the narrative toward national security, accusing Denmark of a decades-long failure to neutralize a perceived “Russian threat” on the territory. “Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it,” the President wrote. “Now it is time, and it will be done!!!” He further alleged that NATO has spent 20 years urging Copenhagen to address Russian influence in the region, suggesting that he is now prepared to take unilateral action to mitigate the risk.
“Until Greenland Becomes American”
The rhetoric was backed by immediate economic consequences. On Sunday, the President announced a 10% tariff on goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. The move specifically targets nations the administration views as roadblocks to American control of the island.
The administration warned that these tariffs, scheduled to take effect on February 1, will remain in place “until Greenland becomes American.”
