European military personnel began arriving in Greenland on Thursday, as U.S. President Donald Trump renewed claims that the United States needs control of the Arctic island for national security reasons.
France said an initial 15-strong military contingent had arrived, with additional forces expected in the coming days. Other European allies are also expected to contribute personnel as part of coordinated exercises with Denmark, which oversees Greenland’s defence.
The deployment comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Arctic, a region of growing strategic importance due to its location and natural resources.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland is vital to U.S. security, reviving controversial remarks that have drawn criticism from European leaders, who insist the island’s future is a matter for Denmark and Greenland alone.
Danish officials have said the presence of European troops underscores NATO unity and commitment to regional security.
